Broward County Encourages Small Business and High Technology

One of four counties comprising the region known as South Florida, Broward County is the second-most populous county in the state of Florida, with a population of 1.9 million residents.

Broward encourages small business and entrepreneurs, and at last count had more than 47,700 small businesses providing 308,000 jobs with a combined payroll of $12 billion.  Only 3% of all firms in Broward employ 500 or more workers.

Of Broward’s small businesses, 17% operate in the professional, scientific and technology industries, while another 13% are in retail and 11% in the healthcare and social services sectors. The county’s unemployment rate, as of July 2019, was 3.3%.

Broward is served by the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which supports over 700 daily flights to 135 domestic and international destinations and is a popular gateway to the Caribbean. More than 35 million passengers transited FLL in 2018.

Port Everglades is the world’s third busiest cruise port after PortMiami and Port Canaveral, and served 3.8 million cruise ship passengers in 2017.

The Broward School District is the sixth largest in the U.S., serving a diverse population of 270,000 students and approximately 175,000 adult students in 241 schools and technical colleges. There are also a number of excellent private schools in the region.
